ABQ Rugby Club to Play in Mexico to Bridge Cultures Through Sports

Aguascalientes, Mexico - The ABQ Rugby Club will be on a cultural exchange trip to Aguascalientes, MX from April 23rd to the 25th. The team will field their Aguilas Aztecas side to participate in the 2026 San Marqueño 10s Rugby Tournament (2025 featured the ABQ Aardvarks). Aguilas Aztecas is the first Mexican-American women’s & men’s team that is also affiliated with ABQ Rugby Club. The tourney takes place during La Feria San Marcos - the largest fair in Mexico that attracts 8,000,000 festival goers.  In Mexico the ABQ Rugby Club will take part in a cultural exchange, coordinated with Salma Luevano, the coordinator of inclusion under the Secretary of Economics, a member of President Sheinbaum’s cabinet. Last year’s cultural exchange helped bridge economic ties with the New Mexico state government with the Mexico Secretary of Economics. A letter and NM themed gifts were provided by the

department of tourism to present to Diputada Salma Luevano. Aguilas Aztecas will be

meeting with members of the Aguascalientes community to share the benefits of rugby to build community, character, and physical & mental wellness. The Albuquerque Rugby Club thanks their local sponsors and are still taking donations to help the team with expenses.

The ABQ Rugby Club is a non-profit  that features the ABQ Aardvarks Club and a new international project of Aguilas Aztecas. The Aardvarks are one of the longest running sports clubs in NM that was established in1972. The Aguilas Aztecas is the first Mexican-American women & men’s rugby club.  The mission of ABQ Rugby Club is to ensure that rugby is for everyone and there is always opportunity to play - from youth, adult club, and even international pathways. In 2025 the cultural exchange in Mexico led to Mexico bidding and earning the 2027 NORAM cup in Queretaro, MX - North America’s biennial gay and inclusive rugby tournament.
